FAQS ABOUT HANDS-FREE
What does Hands-Free really mean?
Hands-free means you just can't hold your phone while driving. You can still use GPS and make calls using hands-free technology - but your phone must not be in your hand while driving.
Doesn't Florida already have a Hands-Free law?
Two existing statutes are specifically for texting and driving only. Section 316.305 and Section 316.306, Florida Statutes, refer to texting and driving and using wireless devices in a handheld manner in school and work zones only. The loophole allowing drivers to hold their device to enter an address into GPS makes the laws useless and unenforceable.
Do other states have similar laws?
Yes, 34 other states currently have Hands-Free laws in place that prohibit holding a device while driving on all roads.
What are the stats on phones, driving, and crashes?
Drivers who text while driving are 23 times more likely to be involved in a crash or near-miss event.
You are four times more likely to be involved in a crash just by having a phone in your hand.
On average, more than nine people die on Florida roads every day, and six of these deaths are attributed to distracted driving.
Does Hands-Free really make a difference?
Yes. In 12 of the first states to adopt a Hands-Free law, they saw traffic fatalities decrease by at least 16%. Ohio had a 25% drop in road fatalities in the six months after the law was passed in April 2023.
What else can I do to support this cause?
Share this petition with your friends, family, and colleagues. Contact your local and state representatives to let them know we need a Hands-Free Florida.
Lead by example; put your phone and other distractions down and just drive. And speak up if you're a passenger and the driver is distracted. The life you save could be your own!
